The Sault Ste. Marie Snowmobile Association grooms approximately 65 miles of trails in, and around, the city of Sault Ste. Marie & Chippewa County. There is a groomed trail within the city limits, that runs right past most of the lodging establishments and restaurants along the I-75 Business spur. This city trail provides easy access to trails to the west via a newly opened 12-foot X 12-foot tunnel underneath the I-75 expressway! You no longer have to run 3 Mile Rd overpass to get to the trail. A visitor can travel right from the hotel to gas or food, by sled, and right out of the city on a groomed trail.

In addition to registration of a snowmobile in Michigan or from another state or province, a person who desires to operate a snowmobile in this state shall purchase a $20.00 snowmobile trail permit sticker. The snowmobile trail permit sticker shall be valid for a period of 1 year which begins October 1 and ends September 30 of the following year.

The Keweenaw's $11,000,000 Snowmobile Bridge
The Portage Lift Bridge, a double-decker bridge that allows the road traffic to travel on the top level, while the snowmobilers pass back and forth on the lower level. The bridge was constructed in 1959 at a cost of $11,000,000, and at that time, the lower level was used for rail traffic. With the abandonment of rail service, the lower level is now open in the winter exclusively to snowmobiles. Riders can travel the entire length of the Keweenaw Peninsula in safety and comfort, even across the Portage Waterway.
